1) General Questions

1.1 什么是Mikogo?
Mikogo是一款图像界面简单易用的桌面共享软件,它的一系列特色功能适用于各种场合,如:

1.2 Do I need to register an account?
No. You can download the software and use the high majority of features without an account. However there are a few benefits when you register an account. Within Mikogo, there are a couple of features that are account-based, and you will need an account in order to use these features. Such account-based features include the “Scheduler” and “Profile Manager”. Registering an account also means you can login to MyAccount to manage your account and access session statistics.

1.3 What is my username?
Your username is the email address that you used to register your Mikogo account. For example: [email protected]

1.4 How many participants can join a Mikogo session?
Using the free version, you can have up to 2 other people join your session and view your screen live over the Web. Including yourself as the organizer and the presenter, this means that 3 people can be connected in a free Mikogo session. Depending on which business license you select, you can have up to 25 participants. More information available on our Pricing page.

1.5 How can I set a preferred session ID?
In version 3 there was an option to “set preferred session ID”. This is no longer available in Mikogo Version 4. We removed it due to security reasons and the problems it caused Mikogo users in the past. Too many users selected session IDs that were too simple (like 123-456-789 or 111-222-333) and then reported to us that unwanted guests joined their sessions. Also, some users reported to us that they had planned an upcoming session and informed their participants about the preferred session ID they intended to use, but when they started the session they got a different session ID because somebody else has already started it.
Because the session ID is 9 digits long, you would think that the odds of this happening are very small. But because many users selected session IDs that were “too simple”, the probability reduced a lot and we decided to remove this option from Version 4 in the interests of security for the Mikogo users.

Alternative solution: We suggest you use the Scheduler which allows you to reserve multiple session IDs which you can then use repeatedly. This is a more much reliable and secure option than setting a preferred session ID (like in Version 3) because a scheduled session and its corresponding session ID will be reserved for you and you only. When you schedule a session using the Scheduler, Mikogo will assign you a random session ID which will be reserved to your Mikogo account. Nobody else will be able to reserve that session number and it won’t be selected as a random number when you start an ad-hoc session.
For details on using the Scheduler in Mikogo Version 4, please see the User Guide.

1.6 Is the Mikogo Skype Extra still available?
This was available back in 2008, however Skype discontinued their Extras program in 2009. Skype announced this to all software companies who had developed a Skype Extra:

“Unfortunately I (Skype spokesperson) have to announce that the Skype Extras program will be shut down, effective September 11th 2009. Despite the incredible breadth of Extras developed for Skype, simply not enough people were using them to justify our continued support of the Extras program.”

This means that there is no possibility for us to develop the Extra any further. If you wish to use Skype during your Mikogo sessions, this is still possible. Simply download and use both Skype and Mikogo in tandem. You can call one of your Skype contacts, start a Mikogo session, and then tell your Skype contact the Mikogo session ID. Your Skype contact can then join your Mikogo session as a normal participant would, i.e. via http://go.mikogo.com.

1.7 Can I continue to use Version 3?
Mikogo3 is no longer available however BeamYourScreen3 is available, which is identical to Mikogo3 in the sense that it has the same-look user interface, same installation procedure, same method for starting and joining sessions, same feature set PLUS it offers the HTML Viewer.
If you prefer to continue using Version 3 and not upgrade to Mikogo4, you can do so by buying a license for BeamYourScreen3.

2) Getting Started

2.1 如何开始使用?
Getting started with Mikogo is so easy that you’ll be a master within minutes. Follow these three steps to begin:

Step 1: Download the Mikogo organizer software to your computer:

When you start the application, the Mikogo micon icon will appear in your system tray (if you’re using a Windows PC) or it will appear in the menu bar (if you’re a Mac user or Linux user).

Step 2: To start a session, please click on the start symbol start symbol in the Mikogo panel, and then the Start Session button. The session will instantly start presenting you with the Participant List containing your unique 9-digit Session ID.

Step 3: Notify your friends of the session ID, who can use it to join your session from go.mikogo.com, and enjoy the Mikogo experience!

Further information about downloading the software is available on the download page or within the user guides. You can also see a video on this process by visiting our Video Tutorials page.

2.2 How do I get the session ID?
Session IDs are required by those looking to join a session, and not for those who are starting a session. When the organizer starts a session, the session ID is provided to the organizer by the Mikogo software.
If you’re about to join a session and don’t have a session ID, please contact the organizer of the Mikogo session.
If you are the session organizer and you need to learn how to start a session and receive the session ID, please read FAQ Question 2.1.

2.3 What do session participants require in order to join a Mikogo session?
In order to join a session via the connection program you require a computer with Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista, Windows 2008, or Windows 7 as the operating system or an Intel Mac (not PowerPC) with Mac OS X 10.5.0 or higher as well as an Internet connection. For using Mikogo on a Linux computer, please refer to the system requirements at the bottom of our Linux Download page.
When joining with the HTML Viewer you only need an Internet connection and a browser (any browser). Cookies need to be activated.

2.4 Do my participants have to install the Mikogo software?
No. Participants never need to install software. They only download the connection program from the Mikogo website and execute it in a temporary folder. There is no need for them to install the Mikogo software. Alternatively, participants can login to your session using the HTML Viewer. In this case, they do not even have to download the connection program. Instead they simply view your screen live from within their browser.

2.5 A participant or I can’t connect with Mikogo and we don’t know why.
In order to provide detailed information for our support team to find the reason and solution, please create a .log file of your attempts to start Mikogo. To do so, please click on Settings in your Mikogo interface and select “Create connection log”. A .log file will then be created the next time you attempt to start a Mikogo session. The .log file will be created and saved in the same folder where Mikogo is saved.
For your participant it might be necessary to save the Mikogo connection program first, run it, exit the login window, and then follow the steps above.
After that please send the .log file with a short description to [email protected]

2.6 When I start a session, my screen immediately begins to replicate itself every few seconds, getting progressively smaller and fitting within the previous screen window. Why is this happening and how do I stop it?
This happens when a user starts a session and then joins from the same computer. This results in a mirror effect as if two mirrors are held in front of each other and you see yourself over and over again. To avoid this effect please share screens between at least two computers, one computer to start a session from and then another computer to join this session.

2.7 I have a new computer. How can I install Mikogo on it?
Please go to the download page, select from either the Windows, Mac or Linux options, and follow the instructions. Once Mikogo is installed on your computer enter your user details under Account Information, if you have registered an account. If you wish to use Mikogo without registering an account, simply start a session.

2.8 我发起会议时所得到的ID是否有时间或其他限制?
No. You can organize and join as many sessions with Mikogo as you wish. And there is no time limit, so you can share your screen with your participants in a free online meeting for as long as you please.

Please note: When you start a session, the “Participant List” area will appear containing the unique 9-digit session ID. As soon as you receive the session ID, you have 30 minutes for someone to join your session. If nobody joins your session within those 30 minutes, the session ID will expire and the session will end. However as soon as at least one participant has joined the session, you can keep the session running for as long as you wish.

3) Privacy & Security

3.1 Does Mikogo encrypt the transmitted screen data?
Yes. We use 256-bit AES end-to-end encryption to encrypt all screen data transmitted by Mikogo. You will find more information on the Mikogo security in our Security Document.

3.2 Is it possible to password-protect a Mikogo session?
Yes. You can individually set a session password for each session you are planning in the Scheduler. When you plan a session you can enter the password in the field “Session Password”.

3.3 Can the remote control be activated without the participant realizing it?
No. Remote keyboard and mouse control can only be activated upon the explicit approval of the participant. No one can access a remote computer without the respective user knowing it.

4) Technology

4.1 Does Mikogo work through firewalls and proxy servers?
Yes. When you start or join a session, Mikogo establishes one or several secure connections with a Mikogo server. Mikogo employs intelligent tunneling technology, using ports that are already open in your firewall and proxy server (Port 80 and Port 443). Mikogo works with your existing network configuration. The proxy server information is automatically detected or can be manually specified in the software settings. If you have a personal firewall installed on your PC, you might be asked to allow the Mikogo software to connect to a Mikogo server.

4.2 Which ports does Mikogo use?
Mikogo uses port 443 (SSL) and port 80 (http). Since those ports are open by default in most cases, you do not need to change the settings of your network and/or firewall.

4.3 What does “integration of the session login into my website” mean?
With the integration of the session login into your website, your session participants can join your Mikogo session from your own website. As a result your participants do not have to visit the Mikogo website. If you wish to integrate the session login into your website, you can download a small piece of HTML code free of charge. Please refer to the “Session Login Integration Guide” on our Documents page. Integrating the session login into your website takes a matter of minutes.

4.4 What are the hardware and software requirements in order to use Mikogo?
You need a computer with a Windows™ operating system and an Internet connection. Your computer must have Microsoft Windows™ XP, 2003, Windows 7 or Vista. You can also use Mikogo on a Intel Mac computer (not PowerPC) with Mac OS X 10.5.0 or higher. For using Mikogo on a Linux computer, please refer to the system requirements at the bottom of our Linux Download page. For optimal performance the minimum system requirements are Pentium 500 MHz CPU and 128MB RAM. Apart from this there are no further systems requirements.

4.5 What is the HTML Viewer and what are its advantages?
The HTML Viewer is an advanced and alternative connection method for your guests. With the standard login, your participants have to download a small connection program (with no installation). However when using the HTML Viewer there are no downloads required. Rather, your participants are able to see your screen simply as a website from within their Internet browser. This means participants can join from any Internet browser including browsers on mobile devices, such as smartphones. The HTML Viewer has been developed specifically for online presentations and optimized for this use case. Please note that the HTML Viewer does not support all available Mikogo features such as change of presenter and remote control. To join a session via the HTML viewer, ask your guests to go to http://go.mikogo.com and select “HTML Viewer” as the Connection Method.

5) Using Mikogo

5.1 What can I do in MyAccount?
In the MyAccount section of the website, you find your session statistics, you can change your password, edit your contact information and activate a license key.
Furthermore, you have the option “Feature Settings”, which gives you the possibility to integrate your company logo, add a welcome screen or use your own waiting room image for the waiting lounge of the scheduler.

5.3 How can I change my password?
Log on to MyAccount with your username and your password. Click “Change Password” in the menu and enter your old password once and confirm the new password twice. Do not forget to save your changes before you exit MyAccount.

5.5 Where can I find the Mikogo session recordings?
Mikogo session recordings are stored by default in My Documents\Mikogo\Records. Of course you can change the default location by opening the Mikogo interface, clicking on Settings, and then change the location under “Saved Recording Location”.

5.6 我发起会议时为什麽会得到一条“验证失败”的信息?
In this case, your user details have been incorrectly entered. Try re-entering all details under “Account Information”.
Solution: Run Mikogo so the interface panel appears on your desktop. Click on the Account Information symbol so the respective drawer opens below containing three fields for you to enter your username, password and name. Now delete the data in the username and password fields. Re-enter you username (which is your email address), password, and name, and then click on OK. It’s important to click OK to ensure your details are saved. Then return to the Start Session drawer and click the “Start Session” button – the Participant List will appear containing your current 9-digit session ID.
Be careful if you just copy and paste your password from the email you received, as you may accidentally copy spaces on either side of the password.
If you still encounter difficulties starting a session please reset your password.

5.7 How do I install Mikogo on my PC?
Please download the Mikogo software for organizers from our Download section.

5.8 I cannot start a session. The firewall on my computer might be blocking Mikogo.
If you are unable to start or join sessions, a personal firewall might be blocking Mikogo. We prepared guidelines for several personal firewall products that explain how you can allow Mikogo to connect to the Internet. To gain further information on how to add Mikogo to your personal firewall please go to Firewalls and select the firewall you are using.

5.9 Can I use Mikogo on a Mac?
Yes. You can download Mikogo for a Mac computer on an Intel Mac (not PowerPC) with Mac OS X 10.5.0 or higher.

5.10 When a participant joins a session from a Mac computer, I cannot switch presenter or hand over remote control. How can that be fixed?
If this occurs, it is because the participant on the Mac has joined the session through the HTML Viewer. The participant can join in two ways – through the Mac application (a .dmg file), or via the pure presentation mode, known as the HTML Viewer. When the participant visits the http://go.mikogo.com page to join the session, they can choose their preferred way of joining. If the participant selects to join with the Mac application (the .dmg file) then it is possible to switch presenter and enable remote control during the session. On the other hand, when the participant enters the session ID along with their name and clicks the “Join Session” button on the login page, they will join the session via the HTML Viewer and therefore Switch Presenter and Remote Control will not be possible.

5.11 Mikogo always runs automatically, when I switch on my computer. How can I change this?
Mikogo usually starts when your computer starts up. You can change this by opening the Mikogo Settings (when there is no session currently running), and uncheck the option “Start program at computer startup”.

5.12 During a session my participants get a message when another participant has logged into the session. Can that be changed?
There are two possibilities to hide the participant list from other participants. One is that you go to Settings and Features once you have started a session and disable the “Participant List” feature.
As an alternative you can create a profile where this feature is hidden by default. Please have a look in our user guide on how to create profiles.

5.13 The M icon in my system tray has disappeared. But when I click on the M icon on my desktop or the M icon next to my desktop Start button it says “Mikogo is already started. Please click on the icon in the system tray to start a session.” How can that be fixed?
You need to click on the M icon in your system tray – note, that the system tray is the small area next to your computer’s clock. By default, this area is in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.
Sometimes the system tray “swallows” icons (not only Mikogo, also others). In order to get it back again you first need to open the task manager (Press Ctrl+Alt+Del or right-click on an empty spot next to the clock on your screen). When you have the task manager open, click on the Processes tab. Then end the Mikogo-Host process. Then you can start Mikogo again and the icon will re-appear in your system tray.

5.14 How do I uninstall Mikogo? What can I do if the regular uninstall process is not working?
If the regular uninstall process is not working please right-click on the Mikogo shortcut on your desktop and select properties. Here you will find the file location. Please navigate to the named file location, start the remover.exe (or uninstall.exe), and this will uninstall Mikogo completely.

5.15 The connection or screen transmission is very slow. What could be the reason and what can I do?
Perhaps this is related to the speed of your Internet connection. To test the available bandwidth, please go to www.speedtest.net. You will see a map – please click on the yellow star in the centre of the map. Your transfer rate will then be determined. Note that this may take a moment. Following the test, the available bandwidth (Up- and Download speed) will be shown. We suggest an upload of 1 MB/s to ensure a smooth and fast transmission.

5.16 I try to show a PowerPoint presentation in full screen mode to my participants but the presentation does not appear on the participants’ screen. What is the reason and how can this be solved?
When a PowerPoint presentation is started and you don’t show new applications then the full screen presentation is hidden when the full screen mode is started. To show your presentation in full screen mode, you need to show “new applications” as the full screen mode is handled as a separate application by Microsoft Windows. To do this, open the Mikogo interface when a session is running, then open Application Selection, and then check the box “New Applications”.

5.17 When I try to show a movie all my participants see is a black spot on their screen, how can I avoid that?
This phenomenon is related to the hardware acceleration of your PC, to avoid the issue please turn off the hardware acceleration. To do so, please right-click on an empty spot on your desktop, then select Properties, and after that the Tab settings. At this point, please click the Advanced button, select the Troubleshoot tab and adjust the hardware acceleration to None.

5.18 When I present my screen my mouse is blinking and it’s hard to control my movements. How can I prevent that?
This phenomenon is related to the hardware acceleration of your PC, to avoid the issue please turn off the hardware acceleration. To do so, please right-click on an empty spot on your desktop, then select Properties, and after that the Tab settings. At this point, please click the Advanced button, select the Troubleshoot tab and adjust the hardware acceleration to None.

5.19 I have customers I connect with very often. Is there a way they don’t need to go to my website and enter all the details all the time?
Your participants can save the Mikogo connection program for participants on their desktop, so they don’t need to download it every time from the website. They can download it by clicking here. To join your session, your participants double-click on the M-icon on their desktop, click “Run” and enter the session ID.

5.20 I integrated the Mikogo session login on my website but some participants can’t join properly, especially when the HTML Viewer is used. Why is that happening?
It’s likely that your website uses frames which cause problems with Internet Explorer. Please integrate the code in a webpage without frames or have the session login page open in a new window.

5.21 My participant is unable to join my session, the following message appears: “Your proxy or Internet access is password-protected. Please enter the name and password that you use to connect to the Internet or log in to Windows”. What caused the issue and is there a workaround?
Your participant has an “authenticated proxy server”. They are probably in a corporate network and their Internet access is regulated. In order to access the Internet, they have to enter a username and password. In many cases, they will be able to enter their Windows username and password to authenticate. Mikogo supports authenticated proxy servers, but the username and password have to be entered by the participant in order to connect.

5.22 我尝试发起会议,但却被要求填入一组9位数的号码。
You have downloaded the participant program for Windows computers (mikogo-viewer.exe) by clicking on “Join Session” from the Mikogo homepage. Participants that want to join a Mikogo session need to do this and then they need a Session ID (the 9-digit number). But if you are looking to organize and start a session, you do not need a Session ID. Rather you create the Session ID yourself using the Mikogo organizer program.

To start and organize sessions click on “Start Session” on the Mikogo homepage or visit the Mikogo download pages. If you need further information on how to start a session and receive the session ID, please read FAQ Question 2.1.

5.23 The Mikogo panel is not visible on an RDP/Terminal Server.
The Mikogo software has a feature to display User Access Control (UAC) elements. If this feature is activated the software is started as a system user. In this case, the Mikogo panel is not visible in an RDP/Terminal Server session. To disable this special mode, please start a Mikogo session, open “Settings”, and click on the “Disable Service” button. Then please stop Mikogo by ending the session and closing Mikogo with a right-click on the system tray M icon and then on “Exit”.

The next time you start Mikogo a UAC window will pop up and you must reject it by clicking “No”. Now Mikogo is running in a mode in which the panel is also displayed in terminal sessions to all users.

5.24 Network drives are not listed when transferring files.
Mikogo has a feature to display User Access Control (UAC) elements. If you have activated this feature in the software, the Mikogo panel is started as a system user. In this case the Mikogo software cannot access the network drives of the user who is logged in to that computer. To disable this special mode, please start a Mikogo session, open “Settings”, and click the “Disable Service” button. Then please stop Mikogo by ending the session and closing the software with a right-click on the system tray M icon and then on “Exit”.

The next time you start Mikogo a UAC window pops up and you must reject it by clicking “No”. Now Mikogo is running in a different mode where the “Open File” window will display the network drives when you are using the file transfer feature.

5.25 In the Linux version, my settings are not saved and my company logo is not displayed in the user interface.
To ensure Mikogo can save your settings, the folder permissions “Delete and Write” (or sometimes called “Create and Delete”) should be added to the extracted Mikogo folder. To do this right-click the extracted Mikogo folder, select Properties, and go to the Permissions tab. Here you should change the permissions for the user and the user group to “Delete and Write” (or sometimes called “Create and Delete”).
